Typically there will be a custom web page or web application developed that allows the customer to confirm what they are paying for, and that may involve having that data validated against your database. This information is then posted to the payment processor's page, where the customer actually provides their credit card (or bank account) information, and where they actually make the payment. The payment processor then responds with a reply indicating that the payment was made, the amount, and whatever information is needed so that the payment can be automatically applied.
